Grammy award winning Buju Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie, is considered to be one of the most significant and well-regarded artists in Jamaican music.

His stage name originated from two people who were important to him growing up:

• Buju was a nickname given to him by his mother as a child.

• Banton is a Jamaican word that refers to someone who is a respected storyteller, and it was adopted by Buju in tribute to the deejay Burro Banton, whom he admired as a child.
