Also known as “The Messenjah,” Luciano emerged during the 1990s and became one of the leading voices of conscious reggae music.

 

Influenced by artists such as Dennis Brown, Stevie Wonder and Frankie Paul, Luciano developed a style rooted in spirituality, Rastafarian culture and social commentary. His stage name was inspired by opera singer Luciano Pavarotti because of the strength and range of his vocals.

 

He began recording in the early 1990s and later formed an important partnership with producer Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell and the Xterminator label. Songs such as It’s Me Again Jah and Poor and Simple, along with albums including Where There Is Life, helped establish Luciano as one of the leading reggae artists of his generation.

 

During the mid-1990s Luciano became associated with the revival of conscious reggae music alongside artists such as Tony Rebel and Garnett Silk. His album Messenger earned him the nickname “The Messenjah” and further established his international success.

 

With a career spanning more than three decades, Luciano has released more than 40 albums, including Grammy-nominated projects such as A New Day and Zion Awake. In 2007 he was awarded Jamaica’s Order of Distinction for his contribution to reggae music.
